Impacts of Torrefaction on PM10 Emissions from Biomass Combustion

Typical biomass torrefaction is a mild pyrolysis process under conditions of ordinary pressure, low temperature (200–300°C) and inert atmosphere. Torrefaction considered to be competitive technology for pretreatment, but its impacts on the emissions particulate matter from combustion are worthy further study. In this paper, three kinds biomass, i.e., bagasse, wheat straw sawdust were selected pretreatment emission characteristics PM10 investigated. The experiments carried out drop tube furnace. combustion-generated bulk ash samples collected subjected analyses by various techniques. results show that tends result in reduction PM1 (particulates with an aerodynamic diameter less than 1 μm) combustion, extent dependent type. torrefied mainly because removes some Cl S thereby suppressing release alkali metals during process. As PM1–10 within 1–10 μm), biomasses consistently reduced, compared their untreated counterparts. This observation primarily accounted enhanced particle coalescence/agglomeration biomasses, which reduces PM1–10.
